Will AI make it better or worse to get older?
We all reach the future at the rate of 60 minutes an hour but the rapid advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) feel faster than that.
There’s so much benefit to be gained from AI - it can diagnose diseases from scans and X-rays more quickly than humans, for example.
There’s also the power to use human-like AI as robots that can care for people in their own homes rather than move into aged care.
But Monash University researchers say AI could entrench ageism and social inequality.
The Monash study reveals ageism is a real risk if AI models are designed by carers who think older people are incompetent or disinterested in technology.
This is because both AI developers and many aged care staff assume older people lack of interest and ignore the capacity to use the technology
