12 caravan additions that will make your life a little easier

Little upgrades can make a world of difference to your caravanning experience. Consider these 12 items as essential as packing your swimmers.

Life on the open road can be an exhilarating adventure, as well as a chance to pare your life back to the bare essentials. There’s something deeply fulfilling about living a simple life, without all the bells and whistles – not to mention the complications – of home.

But having said that, when you're on the road in your caravan for a while, comfort and convenience can make all the difference to your experience. Adding a few well-chosen accessories can transform your caravan from rustic and basic into a cosy home away from home.

These 12 caravan additions are the ones that we think are worth talking to your caravan dealer about, because they have the potential to enhance your travel experience and make life on the road that little bit more comfortable.

1. Reversing camera

If you’re not super-experienced, manoeuvring a caravan into tight spots or reversing in unfamiliar terrain can be a bit on the nerve-wracking side. Add in a campground full of spectators and that feeling can be even greater. A reversing camera provides a clear view of what's behind you, helping you park with precision, avoid obstacles, and reduce the risk of accidents – as well as taunting from your new neighbours.

2. Portable solar panels

When you're camping off-grid, portable solar panels harness the power of the sun to keep your caravan's batteries charged. This means you can enjoy long and relaxed stays in remote locations without worrying about running out of power for lights, appliances, and devices. And all without having to run a noisy and smelly generator.

3. Awnings or shade sails

Awnings and shade sails extend your living space outside the caravan – and no matter how big your caravan is, you’ll want that extra space. They provide protection from the harsh sun or unexpected rain, and create a comfortable outdoor area for cooking, dining, or simply relaxing in the shade.

4. Memory foam mattress topper

This might start to sound like we’re venturing into luxury territory, but it’s important to be real here: caravan mattresses aren't always known for their comfort. A memory foam mattress topper adds a layer of plush cushioning, ensuring a restful night's sleep, even on the toughest caravan bed. Say goodbye to waking up with a bad back after a night on the road!

5. LED lighting strips

LED lighting is energy-efficient and provides bright, evenly distributed illumination. Whether you're reading, cooking, or enjoying an evening in the caravan, these lighting strips create a cosy atmosphere and reduce your energy consumption at the same time.

6. Compact washing machine

Laundromats can be inconvenient, expensive, and sometimes hard to find in remote areas, and bashing your clothes against a rock is just hard work. A compact washing machine lets you do laundry at your convenience, saving you time and money during your travels. When’s the last time washing your clothes felt like a treat?

7. Collapsible kitchenware

Caravan kitchens have limited space. Collapsible pots, pans, and utensils are designed to save space, making meal preparation a much easier proposition. They're also easy to clean and store, keeping your kitchen organised, and your life uncluttered.

8. Portable toilet and shower

During remote camping trips, access to toilets and showers may be limited. Portable options provide convenience and hygiene, ensuring you can freshen up or use the facilities whenever you need them.

9. GPS navigation system

Caravanning often takes you off the beaten path, where traditional maps or smartphone apps may not be reliable. A dedicated GPS navigation system is designed for travellers, helping you find campsites, locate points of interest, and navigate with ease.

10. Caravan-levelling blocks

No, it’s not just you - many camping sites aren't perfectly level, which can leave you feeling a little seasick. Caravan-levelling blocks are helpful for stabilising your caravan, ensuring you sleep comfortably and that your appliances work correctly. They also help prevent the caravan from rocking while you move around inside.

11. Wireless internet router

While disconnecting from everything can sound enticing, it’s nice to be able to stay connected for the things that matter, like keeping in touch with loved ones, accessing travel information, staying entertained, and being able to contact people in an emergency. A mobile router provides Wi-Fi for your devices, allowing you to browse, stream, and work (if you really have to) with ease.

12. Insect screens

Caravanning often takes you to areas where insects can be bothersome – not to mention the fact that they can potentially also carry some pretty serious viruses. Insect screens for windows and doors allow you to enjoy fresh air without unwanted critters invading your caravan. They're particularly handy in hot weather, when you want to keep cool but keep bugs out.
