Breathe out: quick escapes to help you slow right down

Feel like running away for a bit? Us too. Life’s felt way too fast lately, but these beautiful Aussie escapes will help us press pause and slow things down.
By Bron Maxabella
“Stop the world, I want to get off!” That might have been the title of a musical way back in 1961, but that phrase has never felt more relevant. We all could use a break, right?
But where to go? It can be daunting to find the ‘perfect’ short getaway. My checklist may be short, but it’s important:
- Relatively affordable (but it still needs to feel mega luxe).
- Access to good food and wine (to add a little extra magic).
- Quick to get to (but still feels like a world away).
- Low-stress to plan (accommodation, meals, activities are all right there).
- Beautiful views and a calming, natural setting are a given.
While that may sound like an impossible list, each of the destinations below ticks all the boxes. Each offers a unique way to briefly step back from the daily grind and immerse yourself in experiences that nourish the soul.
And because we’re only going for a few nights, I reckon we can probably afford to upgrade… just a bit.
1. Love Cabins at Mount Tomah, New South Wales
For a romantic and slightly unconventional retreat, the Love Cabins in the Blue Mountains are just perfection. These unique accommodations, ranging from treehouses to cave dwellings, are nestled in 600 acres of World Heritage bushland. It's an intimate escape where you can reconnect with nature and each other, without giving up any modern comforts.
2. Hamilton Island, Queensland
In the heart of the spectacular Whitsundays, Hamilton Island is a slice of heaven just a short flight away from most Australian capital cities. We’re talking ‘tropical island dream destination’: pristine beaches, crystal-clear aqua waters, sunset views and lush landscapes.

Sail around the Great Barrier Reef, tee-off at the golf course, indulge in spa treatments, and sip a cocktail as the sun sinks – Hamilton Island is a luxurious quick escape for anyone who wants to indulge in life’s finer moments.

3. Steam Carriage in Forrest, Victoria
All aboard the Steam Carriage in Forrest! This beautifully restored 1926 train carriage is quirky, cosy and completely charming, with a fireplace, clawfoot tub, and the soothing soundtrack of the bush outside. Perfect for slowing down, curling up, and pretending you're in your own vintage romance novel (train whistles optional).
4.Lilypad Palm Beach, New South Wales
Float your cares away at Lilypad Palm Beach, a dreamy, floating villa that feels like your own private island (with a wine fridge and fancy linen).
Just a short boat ride from Sydney, it’s the ultimate unplug-and-exhale escape, where you can soak in a hot tub on the deck, sip sunset rosé, and pretend you're in a James Bond film… but barefoot.
5. Elysia Wellness Retreat, New South Wales
Located in the picturesque Hunter Valley, Elysia Wellness Retreat would scream ‘rejuvenate me!’ except it’s more of a whisper kind of place. You can take part in various wellness programs, enjoy a spa treatment, savor their nutritious gourmet meals, or simply stop for a while to soak in the tranquil vineyard views.
6. Blue Derby Pods Ride, Tasmania
Adventure meets luxury with the Blue Derby Pods Ride. This three-day mountain biking experience takes you through Tasmania's stunning forests, with nights spent feasting on local food and dreaming in private architecturally-designed pods. It's an exhilarating way to immerse yourself in nature without compromising on comfort.
7. Gwinganna Lifestyle Retreat, Queensland
Perched in the Gold Coast Hinterland, Gwinganna offers a one-of-a-kind holistic wellness experience.

With programs focusing on stress reduction, nutrition and fitness, it's a sanctuary for those looking to rejuvenate both body and mind. The retreat's organic food, sprawling gardens and premium spa treatments are the cherries on top.
8. The Hideout, Victoria
Dripping with charm, The Hideout in equally charming Daylesford is a beautifully restored 1860s miner’s cottage, beautifully designed and styled for maximum relaxation.

Think reclaimed timber, a crackling fireplace, and a deep stone bath with garden views. Whether you’re sipping wine on the deck or curled up inside, this stay is rustic romance at its finest.
9. The Arkaba Walk, South Australia
Step back in time with The Arkaba Walk, a guided trek through the ancient landscapes of the Flinders Ranges. Encounter native wildlife, learn about the region's rich history, and sleep under a canopy of stars in luxury swag camps. It's an outback experience that combines adventure with indulgence.
10. Nightfall Camp, Queensland
For a glamping experience like no other, Nightfall Camp offers luxury safari tents beside the waters of Christmas Creek.
With organic meals cooked over an open fire and the sounds of the rainforest as your backdrop, this is ‘minimalist luxury’ we can all get on board with.
11. Blackwood River Houseboats, Western Australia
Cruise into full relaxation mode aboard a Blackwood River Houseboat in WA’s serene South West. It’s your own floating holiday home – no boat licence needed – where you’ll drift past forested banks, drop a line, pour a wine, and let the gentle ripple of the river wash your worries away. Think slow travel with all the comforts (and none of the neighbours).
12. Captains Rest, Tasmania
Tucked away in the quiet fishing village of Strahan, Captains Rest is a charming waterfront cottage that exudes tranquility. With its vintage decor, cozy fireplace and serene views over Lettes Bay, it's the ideal spot to curl up with a good book and let the world drift by.
